  3. Use to nudge ±5 BPM, for ±1.
  4. Pick a time signature — beat 1 rings brighter.

Italian tempo terms

  • Largo · 40–60 — broad, slow.
  • Adagio · 66–76 — slow and stately.
  • Andante · 76–108 — walking pace.
  • Allegro · 120–156 — fast, lively.
  • Presto · 168–200 — very fast.

The Maelzel metronome

Invented in 1815 by Johann Maelzel, the mechanical metronome uses a swinging pendulum with a sliding weight. Moving the weight up slows it down; moving it down speeds it up.

Practice tips

  • Practice tough passages at 50–70% of target tempo, then nudge up by 4 BPM at a time.
  • Set the metronome on the off-beats to internalize the pulse.
