The Maelzel metronome
Invented in 1815 by Johann Maelzel, the mechanical metronome uses a swinging pendulum with a sliding weight. Moving the weight up slows it down; moving it down speeds it up.
Practice tips
- Practice tough passages at 50–70% of target tempo, then nudge up by 4 BPM at a time.
- Set the metronome on the off-beats to internalize the pulse.
